I have a confession to make.
I’m a writer.
I am not a photographer.
When I was growing up, I used to sit in the library with my mom, reading to her as she waited for her reading list to come in.
She’d always have books to pick from, but there was one she always liked that had a certain appeal to me: a new story by a young woman called Nancy.
She had a story about a woman who, after being shot and killed by the police, had a book of her own left behind that would have a storybook ending.
And then she told me that she could find it in the back of her closet.
I knew immediately what I was doing.
The next thing I knew, I was on my way to the library.
And it was the last book I ever owned, a book that would go on to define my life and my career.
I have an abiding memory of that book: I read it to my sister, who was five years old, and she loved it, even though I didn’t.
I thought it was a beautiful, touching book about the human experience.
And when I was six, I decided I wanted to be a writer as well.
So I began writing my first book, and it turned out to be one of the most important books of my life.
That book, I think, inspired my entire career.
My wife, Susan, who is a professional writer herself, had an equally profound impact.
Her first book was The Secret Life of Bees, which became a national bestseller.
And her second book, The Way of the Artist, became a bestseller, too.
But it was Nancy’s story that I was most inspired by.
Her story was the perfect example of the magic of the human spirit: a beautiful story that had been buried for so long that no one ever found it, but you still remember it.
It’s also a story of how we all feel as people when we’re grieving, of how it’s a common human impulse to want to find something to connect with.
And I wanted her story to be the storybook version of what we do, because I want our children to be able to find it, too, as they get older.
It is an easy task, but it’s one I have to continue to work on.
And, as I said, I am a writer, and I know the joy of writing.
I can be a storyteller, but I also know how to find that magic of writing that is essential to living a good life, and to living in a world where we can all share our stories and our hopes and dreams.

The story of Nancy’s book has been the foundation of my entire writing career.
It made me want to be someone who writes about something, that has a story, that can inspire.
The book is the most amazing thing I have ever written.
The first time I read a book was in my early 20s.
It was about a man who, when he was a kid, was told by his mother that his grandfather was a war hero and that he was destined to become a war fighter.
He thought that was a great way to be.
I remember reading that book and thinking, I have never had such a great feeling of accomplishment.
I did not have to wait until I was in the Army to feel that.
I had to do it.
And that’s what I did.
My story was never the most popular.
I never had the most hits.
But I think that if you’re writing about something that you really want to tell, it’s the most powerful thing you can do.
It has such a powerful impact on the way you view the world.
And so I feel lucky that my story is the story of something that really resonates with people.
I think if I could have written it all by myself, I would not have been able to tell it.
I would have lost it.
That’s how I write.
I feel very fortunate.
And yet, it has also made me realize that the truth is always the most valuable thing.
I’ve spent the last five years learning how to write about my life, but my most valuable lesson is that the more you write, the more powerful it becomes.
You get to create an authentic world that’s not about yourself and is not about who you are, but instead about how you think and what you want to do.
And what you don’t want to write is not the truth.
It should not be the truth that you’re trying to tell.
So, the next time someone asks you why you write about yourself, you can tell them that my own story is one of hope and discovery and self-
